Naples, Italy is an internationally recognized gastronomic destination, famous for both its food and wine. This is the legendary birthplace of pizza. The simple and delicious Margherita pizza was named after Queen Margherita of Savoy after her visit to the city in 1889. Raffaele Esposito, the most famous pizza-maker in Naples, named the tri-colored creation in honor of the Queen who had become tired of French food. Other popular Neapolitan dishes include spaghetti alle vongole and Naples’ famous ragù along with seafood, particularly mussels, anchovies, octopus and baccalà alla napoletana (salt cod) and baccalà fritto (fried cod).
